Law Students
At Fish, IP is the focus, not a token practice.
We excel at IP and patent litigation. Our focus attracts highly skilled and intellectually curious summer associates who can grasp technical concepts and legal issues quickly. In turn, we attract clients at the forefront of innovation. Their legal needs are interesting, unique, and cutting-edge, which means there’s never a dull moment for our teams.
Fish is tech heavy, tech savvy, and tech happy.
We are proud to be known as science nerds, techies, bookworms, and brainiacs. From firm leaders to summer associates, our attorneys bring impressive legal and technical experience to our IP and patent litigation practice. Clients rely on us to handle the most complex matters and deliver the most sophisticated results.
Fish offers advanced training and a thorough introduction to our firm to help summer associates succeed.
Our summer associates gain valuable experience by working on a variety of matters and learning from the best in the business. Our training, mentoring, and writing programs build a skill set that prepares summer associates to start contributing to the firm immediately.
Summer associates learn directly from principals about the firm’s ground-breaking cases and bet-the-company litigations. And they attend candid panel discussions hosted by associates who provide advice and guidance based on their experiences. Overall, our goal is to show summer associates what it is really like to work at Fish, and why it continues to be the best place to practice IP law.
Hear from former summer associates about their experiences at Fish.
What surprised you about your summer at Fish?
“Fish encourages younger lawyers to gain early experience in tasks such as leading a deposition or arguing motions. I was surprised to learn that many of the associates I worked with had already taken or defended a deposition, which I had previously thought would only occur later in my career.”
- Grant Brunson, Emory University School of Law
How did this summer prepare you to be a better lawyer?
“Beyond a diverse set of substantive assignments—including brief writing, research, and pro bono work—that improved my technical lawyering skills, I learned a lot about being a better lawyer simply by being around Fish staff that invited me to observe proceedings and experience working as part of a team. I not only observed things like a trial and PTAB proceedings but was able to see what happens behind the scenes and watch it all come together. There is so much to learn just by being around such a talented group of people.”
- Vidhu Joshi, Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law
What was the most valuable experience of your summer?
“Over the course of several weeks, I worked with a principal to draft, edit, and file a dispositive motion in a large case. I learned so much going back and forth with the principal as we developed and refined the arguments in our motion.”
- James Mullen, Duke University School of Law
What's your best memory from your summer at Fish?
“My best memory from Fish so far occurred this past summer at the annual summer associate retreat, where we simulated the delivery of a fundraising pitch on behalf of a non-profit charity. The practice of advocating for these organizations inspired me to implement a robust pro bono practice in my career.”
- Nick Valencia, Texas A&M University School of Law

Pro bono is an integral part of Fish.
The vast majority of our attorneys participate in pro bono work, and we include at least one pro bono work project for all summer associates. We partner with a variety of highly regarded public interest and legal services organizations around the country. Our goal is to provide early exposure and experience that will lead to a career-long commitment to pro bono work.
