Principal and National Chair of Fish's Diversity Initiative Ahmed J. Davis authored an article for The National Law Journal recounting how the patent oath effectively barred African Americans from applying for patents for many years, and how that legacy of exclusion may have contributed to the historic underrepresentation of African Americans among patent holders.
