Three Fish Principals Named 2023 Client Service All-Stars by BTI Consulting Group

Fish & Richardson Principals James Babineau, David Barkan, and Christopher Green have been named 2023 Client Service All-Stars in BTI Consulting Group's survey of general counsel from the world's largest corporations. The prestigious All-Stars list highlights lawyers who deliver "the absolute best levels of client service — better than all others." Babineau was recognized in the intellectual property licensing, transactions, and agreements category, Barkan in complex patent litigation, and Green in IP litigation.

According to BTI, Client Service All-Stars are known for being remarkably practical, savvy, knowledgeable, available, and nimble, as well as able to approach and work though complex problems.

Babineau focuses his practice on advising his clients — which range from Fortune 100 companies to independent inventors — to protect and license their intellectual property, manage their patent portfolios, and avoid infringement risks. Drawing from his own experience in electrical and mechanical technology, he advises these industry-leading clients to structure, establish, and enforce international licensing programs and to negotiate customized license and cross-license deals to maximize the value of their IP. He also advises on IP strategy, including trademark, copyright, and trade secret protection, and guides clients in their implementation to advance their long-term business goals while avoiding unnecessary risks.

Barkan is a trial lawyer who handles highly complex, global, competitor-to-competitor litigation for multibillion-dollar national and international corporations. He is a well-known thought leader in issues related to standard essential patents, including portfolio-level valuations, damages for individual SEPs, licensing rules, and strategic management of global litigation. Barkan has handled more than 100 cases across technology fields, including serving as lead counsel in dozens of semiconductor and software patent cases. Many of his client partnerships have spanned more than two decades, and he has held numerous leadership roles at the firm over the years.

Green’s practice as a first-chair trial lawyer encompasses all areas of IP litigation and counseling, and his experience spans a diverse range of technologies and industries. He has successfully tried cases originating in both state and federal courts in venues across the country for clients ranging from startups to Fortune 100 companies. He also represents clients before the U.S. International Trade Commission and, as a registered patent attorney, he actively assists clients with post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Additionally, Green serves as a regular lecturer on issues relating to IP law.

BTI Client Service All-Stars are selected for recognition based on data collected in BTI’s ongoing Survey of General Counsel, an in-depth interview series involving hundreds of high-level legal decision-makers representing a wide range of industries. These legal decision-makers single out each All-Star — by name and unprompted — as delivering the absolute best client service. Law firms and their attorneys have no influence on the rankings.
