Alexander Rafferty represents chemicals and life sciences industry clients in patent litigation matters spanning a broad range of technologies, from medical devices to petrochemicals.
Alex’s legal skills include formulating case strategies; assisting in expert and witness depositions; and drafting summary judgment briefs, Daubert motions, arbitration contentions, motions to strike, and International Trade Commission complaints. He draws on his experience serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Timothy B. Dyk of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to effectively advocate for his clients in appellate matters.
With a background in chemical engineering and several years of practical industry knowledge, Alex brings to his legal work an on-the-ground familiarity with a range of chemical and industrial technologies, including refinery operations, process design, and polymers. He has assisted clients in cases involving medical devices, medical software, cellular networks, and related technologies, as well as in Hatch-Waxman matters.
While studying law, Alex participated in Harvard Law School’s Legal Services Center, where he drafted briefs resulting in favorable rulings before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Social Security Administration. He also served as a judicial extern at the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology.
Outside of his legal practice, Alex enjoys hiking, camping, cooking, and homebrewing.
